Is Jesus Really God?

Examining the biblical evidence for the divinity of Jesus Christ and what Scripture teaches about His divine nature.

The Biblical Answer

Yes, the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is God. This is not a later invention of the church but a truth revealed throughout Scripture. Jesus is fully God and fully man - a mystery we call the Incarnation. He is the second person of the Trinity, equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit in essence, yet distinct in person.

"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form."

— Colossians 2:9

Jesus Claimed to Be God

Jesus made clear claims to divinity throughout His ministry. He claimed to be equal with God, to have existed before Abraham, and to be one with the Father. These weren't metaphorical statements - they were direct claims to deity that the religious leaders understood clearly.

"I and the Father are one."

John 10:30

Jesus Accepted Worship

Throughout Scripture, worship is reserved for God alone. Yet Jesus repeatedly accepted worship from His followers without correcting them. If Jesus were merely a good teacher or prophet, He would have redirected this worship to God alone.

"Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.'"

Matthew 14:33

Jesus Forgave Sins

Only God has the authority to forgive sins, yet Jesus regularly forgave people's sins during His earthly ministry. When the religious leaders questioned this, Jesus proved His authority by healing the paralytic, demonstrating His divine power.

"When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'"

Mark 2:5

The Apostles Proclaimed His Divinity

The apostles, who knew Jesus personally, clearly taught that He was God in human form. Paul, John, Peter, and others all affirmed Jesus' divine nature in their writings, calling Him God and attributing divine qualities to Him.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

John 1:1

The Names and Titles of Jesus

The Bible gives Jesus names and titles that belong only to God: Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Lord of lords, King of kings, Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. These titles clearly identify Jesus with Yahweh, the God of Israel.

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given... And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

— Isaiah 9:6

"Thomas said to him, 'My Lord and my God!'"

— John 20:28
